Height & Seek

Seeking potential applications for an altimetry system capable of improving ocean height measurement precision by approximately 50% over existing technologies

ESA #2

CHALLENGE FROM

FROM SPACE

Over the years, conventional radar altimeters have generated substantial amounts of data, enabling the observation of numerous ocean features. However, traditional altimeters are limited in their ability to provide the high spatial and temporal resolution required for accurate mapping of ocean mesoscale phenomena.

The core principle of this technology patented by ESA (EP2144085B1) involves a satellite altimetry with delay-Doppler effect compensation. The system also uses the reflection on the ocean of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals and allows a high spatial-temporal sampling of the Earth’s surface providing an improved height precision measurement.

The developed technology can be used for mesoscale ocean altimetry (this means mid-sized ocean phenomena, roughly 10-500 km across) and can for instance be applied in the oceanography and meteorology industries.

TO THE CHALLENGE

Your challenge is to find a new area to use this patent where that extra precision really matters. Think about defence communications, microwave and satellite parts, or even agriculture, forestry, and fishing.
Think and develop a business idea to bring it to the market.
Build your business case: Who are your customers? What do they need? What makes your solution stand out compared to what’s already on the market?
